Health Science

According to US News and World Report Top 100 Jobs, 52 of the top 100 careers are in healthcare or healthcare support. With over 250 careers in the Health Science field, the possibilities are endless. The Health Science Career Cluster is divided into three different pathways: Nursing Services, Therapeutic Services and Exercise Physiology. Health Science Education is the foundation course for the Health Science Cluster and is a perquisite for all additional courses.

Anatomy & Physiology is a required upper level course for all pathways. A & P is designed to develop an understanding of the structures and functions of the human body, while relating those to knowledge and skills associated with pathophysiology. Pharmacological Sciences will be a senior level course for students interested in pharmacy careers. The course will include classroom and clinical experience.

With many healthcare careers expected to experience a significant shortage of trained staff, students can prepare to enter the job market or pursue continuing education in a healthcare field during their high school experience.

 

HEALTH SCIENCE EDUCATION

One Semester 1 credit Grade 9-10

Prerequisite: none

Health Science Education is the beginning course in the Health Science Cluster. Students will discover the wide variety of career choices available in healthcare and learn the qualities they need to achieve success in a healthcare career choice. The class introduces basic anatomy, legal aspects, infection control, and other related topics.

 

MEDICAL THERAPEUTICS

One Semester 1 credit Grade 10-12

Pre-requisite: Health Science Education with a C or better

Medical Therapeutics investigates anatomy, physiology, and careers related to the medical therapeutic cluster. Pharmacology, safety, nursing and additional healthcare careers are included. Skills related to Medical Therapeutics cluster will be performed in the classroom setting. Successful students may apply for the clinical course.

REHABILITATION CAREERS

One Semester 1 credit Grade 10-12

Pre-requisite: Health Science Education with a C or better

Rehabilitative Careers is for students interested in rehabilitation careers in all areas of therapy. The students will demonstrate skills needed for Rehabilitative Careers. Topics addressed will include: anatomy, physiology, diagnosis and treatment of injuries, and other aspects related to health care. Successful students may apply for the clinical course.

 

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY

One Semester 1 credit Grade 11-12

Pre-requisite: Any 2 classes taken in Health Science POS’s. Must have maintained a B average in both classes.

ELECTIVE COURSE ONLY – WILL NOT COUNT TOWARD CLUSTER

Medical terminology is designed to develop a working knowledge of the language of health professions. Students acquire word-building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, combining forms, and abbreviations. Utilizing a body systems approach students will define, interpret, and pronounce medical terms relating to structure and function, pathology, diagnosis, clinical procedures, and pharmacology. Students will use problem-solving techniques to assist in developing an understanding of course concepts.

 

HONORS PHARMACOLOGICAL SCIENCES

One Semester 1 credit EPSO Grade 12

Pre-requisite: Medical Therapeutics - Enrollment is limited to seniors who have completed 3 courses in the Health Science cluster and are successfully completing the established application process.

Pharmacology is an applied course in the Therapeutic Services program of study to prepare for students to be prepared to sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board upon graduation. The course provides information on the role and responsibilities of the healthcare worker in a pharmacy setting and all aspects of pharmacology. Students will have supervised clinical experiences along with classroom learning.

 

HONORS NURSING EDUCATION CLINICAL

One Semester 1 credit EPSO Grade 12

Enrollment is limited to seniors who have completed 3 courses in the Nursing Services cluster to include Medical Therapeutics and Anatomy and Physiology. Students must successfully complete the established application process in order to register for this Clinical Course.

Nursing Education is a supervised clinical experience in a healthcare facility with classroom learning that will prepare students to take the state CNA exam. Students will be job-ready and have hands-on experience. The knowledge gained will provide advantages for those pursuing higher education in a health-related field.

 

HONORS CLINICAL INTERNSHIP

One Semester 1 credit EPSO Grade 12

Enrollment is limited to seniors who have completed 3 courses in the Health Science Cluster (Medical Therapeutics and Rehab are recommended) and successfully completing the established application process.

Clinical Internship is a capstone course and work-based learning experience designed to provide students with real world application of skills and knowledge obtained in the previous health science courses. Clinical Internship provides an opportunity for placement in athletic training centers, rehab centers, medical offices, hospitals, and other health care facilities. Observe and learn the role of a healthcare professional in the clinical setting.
