Asking for Recommendation Letter

1. Create a resume. Sample resume

2. Fill out the the Student Recommendation Form

3. Ask a teacher, counselor, administrator, or coach if they would be willing to write you a positive letter of recommendation.  Give them at least three weeks notice before the deadline.

4. Give the recommender a copy of your resume and Student Recreation form.

5. If asked by college or scholarship organization – you should “waive your right to view” the letter.  If you have concerns about this, speak with your counselor.  They can explain why that is important.

6. Obtain recommender’s email address.  Some requests are sent electronically such as Common app, Coalition, etc.

7. Follow up with the recommender as deadline approaches to see if they are having any issues.

8. Send a thank you note after they complete and submit your recommendation. Recommenders likely have a full-time job.  They are completing your letter on their own time and out of the goodness of their heart.
